Settled in now
Over a month has passed and things seem to be routine and now the little nitty things of their culture start to appear. I am still enjoying my job and life here. I am currently battling a cold but I think it is nothing more than just a seasonal/new location type of illness.
We haven't been to tons of places lately as we are all pretty busy with work and little outings we make with friends from school or with eachother. I recently went to a party with some friends from class to watch a world cup soccer qualifying match. It was a fun party with Mexican beer and Pizza, I couldn't believe how into the game everyone gets, even the girls swear.
The best part of the event was that because I came from work to class, and then class to this party, I was wearing my tie and dress clothes. Mexico won the game and then the city celebrated in its plaza of revolution. Americans SHOULDN'T go there during these times because many beatings have taken place.
Mexico has a famous ballet center that we visited on Saturday and toured the complex. Major murals are all over the walls and there was an exhibit with Greco. It was funny because this artist is Spanish and I know a lot about him from my Spanish Art class. While leaving this one woman asked me if I was on channel 3 here around 8 oclock on some TV show. It was pretty funny because she didn't believe me when I said no.
Today we awoke quite early for a Sunday and took the metro to the bus station in the Northern part of the city. Our final destination was the Pyramids outside the city!
Teotihuacan is it's name and it was the massive city the Mayans created around 200 AD and inhabited before the Aztecs took over around the 700's. There used to be over 100,000 people living in this city, which made it one of the largest cities in the world for its time. It is ruins now and there are two pyramids, one dedicated to the sun and the other to the moon. It required a lot of walking and the steps going upward were really steep, kind of like a ladder.
After walking around and me getting sun burnt we took the bus home and now I am sitting in my nice bed watching some documentaries, thanks youtube.
Interesting
American Status:
Mexicans really can't be anti-american because of the economic benefits they reap from our nation. They assume we all have a lot of money and on Friday we went to a club with a line of about 100 people outside, the bouncer came and took us to the front because we are American. It was a nice perk and after living in Europe it was something I was not used too.
Don't get cocky though, because of the spring breaks American college girls take in Mexico American women are thought of as easy. American girls here are often cat called on the streets and due to the US's porn industry and again the spring breaks, bad intentions are often assumed of our females. It is kind of sad, but we earned this stereotype.
The City Life:
Mexico was built on a lake and so the roads and sidewalks and even foundations are sinking. If you are used to walking with your head high don't come here because there are numerous holes and cracks all over the streets.
Next week is Mexico's Independence day, lots of decorations are already lining the streets. The HSBC tower which is a good 60 stories has a flag hanging from the top to bottom. Mexicans are very patriotic and after being in separist Spain it is nice to see a united nation. Even the little concrete houses with no windows are flying the Mexican flag.
Thanksgiving:
While at the soccer party I went to buy some snacks at the gas station at around 10:30pm. When I was standing in line a skinny little boy came to the counter and started to put my food into a plastic bag for the me and told me gracias. His mom was working the cash register and after doing his job he went and wiped off all of the tables in the back.
This boy was probably around 6 years old. It was sad and I just thought of my little cousin Jenna and she is a few years older than this boy and I bet on this random Tuesday night at 10:30 PM she is in bed or eating a bowl of ice cream or something. Just imagine some child you know doing this same thing. What a luxury we have to not be stuck in poverty like this hard working family. When we went back to the party and finished the soccer game I moved on from that moment, but truly appreciate all the opportunities I have.
Mexico has the everything here. The rich people whom I work with and help register for events and the little guy working for his mom at the corner gas station late at night. There is a lot more to come from me and my experience here. Again let me know if you have questions.
